Everything We Know About Avengers: Doomsday So Far

Four years is a long wait, even for Marvel fans.

And yet, here we are. Marvel has finally started pulling back the curtain on Avengers: Doomsday. The first trailer landed on July 20, and it did what trailers are supposed to do: tease just enough, then leave you arguing in group chats.

The big hook is simple. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is back. Robert Downey Jr. is back too, but not as Iron Man. This time, he’s Doctor Doom. That twist alone has sent the fandom into a mild spiral. Fair enough.

Marvel’s setup is loud, but not messy. Thor leads a newly assembled team. Their target is Doom. Their problem is bigger than one villain, though. The film is being framed as a multiverse collision, with heroes from different corners of Marvel forced into the same fight.

Who’s in the cast?

This cast list is stacked. A little absurd, honestly.

Marvel confirmed the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts crew, several returning Avengers, and even some X-Men names. That’s a lot of helmets, capes, and complicated backstories to fit into one film.

From the Thunderbolts side, expected names include Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Lewis Pullman. Then there’s the March 2025 livestream, where Marvel added Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Simu Liu.

That’s before you even get to the X-Men. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and Kelsey Grammer are all in the mix.

Which brings up something I probably should have mentioned earlier—this film sounds less like one team-up and more like a controlled collision. Maybe controlled. Marvel has a habit of promising order and then tossing in three extra dimensions.

Who is the villain?

Doctor Doom is the big bad.

That part? Not subtle.

Downey Jr.’s casting is the story people keep circling back to. He spent more than a decade as Tony Stark, then Marvel brought him back as Victor von Doom. Same actor. Completely different energy. Same room, different storm.

At Comic-Con in July 2024, Downey Jr. stepped out and said, “New mask, same task.” He added, “What did I tell ya? I like playing complicated characters.”

That line stuck. Of course it did.

The obvious question is whether Doom is being played as an alternate-universe version of Stark. Marvel hasn’t spelled that out cleanly. Still, the multiverse setup makes that theory feel pretty alive. Not confirmed. Just very, very alive.

What is the movie about?

Marvel says Avengers: Doomsday “follows beloved heroes from three distinct universes as they’re set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.”

That’s Marvel language for: things go bad, then worse, then weird.

The trailer backs that up. Thor is seen gathering a new group of heroes. He tells them, “Everything that they sacrificed will be for nothing if we do not stand together.” Then he adds, “Put aside your petty squabbles and presume nothing, except this — if you return, you will return as brothers and sisters. But mark my words, we’re going to need a miracle.”

And then the miracle shows up.

Chris Evans appears as Steve Rogers. That reveal matters because it’s the first time Evans and Downey Jr. are both back in the MCU since Avengers: Endgame. The emotional weight is obvious. Fans have waited years for some version of this reunion. Maybe not this version, but close enough to make the theater go quiet for a second.

Trailer clues and what they suggest

The trailer is short, but it’s not shy.

Thor and Doom fight. Rogers returns. The heroes seem exhausted before the real war even begins. There’s a strong feeling that Marvel wants the movie to work both as spectacle and as a reunion story.

I’ll be honest. The most interesting thing isn’t the punch-ups. It’s the pressure. These characters are being asked to carry old history into new chaos. That usually works better than a simple “bigger battle” setup.

And yes, the trailer is also doing that Marvel thing where every shot looks like it’s hiding three secrets. Annoying. Effective. Both.

Who’s directing and writing it?

Anthony and Joe Russo are back in the director’s chair.

That’s a meaningful return. The Russos previously handled Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. They know how to manage a crowded superhero movie without completely losing the thread. Usually.

Stephen McFeely is writing the script. He co-wrote all four of the Russos’ Marvel films. So the creative team is built around people who’ve already survived the MCU machine once before.

When does it come out?

Avengers: Doomsday is set for December 18, 2026.

That release date was delayed from May 1, 2026, after Disney shifted the schedule in May 2025, per Variety. Delays sting a little. Still, Marvel has done this dance before, and fans tend to forgive it if the final result lands hard.

What comes after Doomsday?

The next stop is Avengers: Secret Wars, due in December 2027.

Same core production team. Same Russo brothers. Same Stephen McFeely script setup. Downey Jr. is expected to return there too, along with the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts stars.

So no, Doomsday is not the end of the road. It’s more like the main road finally buckling under pressure.

Why this one matters

Marvel has needed a clean swing like this.

Not perfect. Just bold. Avengers: Doomsday has the kind of cast and setup that can either feel huge or feel crowded. There isn’t much middle ground. That said, the Downey Jr. Doom reveal, Evans’ return, and the Russos coming back give the project a real shot at landing with weight.

One quick human note. A fan at Comic-Con reportedly said, “I came for the Fantastic Four, but RDJ as Doom changed the whole room.” That reaction feels about right. People love a surprise, but they love a good reinvention even more.

Marvel seems to know that. We’ll see if the movie does too.
